Classroom rules and Policies
In addition to teaching you about science, I will regularly remind you of what it means to be a good citizen. Good citizens are responsible, honest, and considerate. Most of my classroom rules and expectations are in place so as to reinforce these values. When faced with a decision, ask yourself if it violates any of the 3 values. These classroom rules are in addition to the regulations already in place for the school. The consequences for each rule depend upon the seriousness of the incident. As well, some rules are more strictly enforced than others. This greatly depends on who it hurts and how much.
Tests: There are set dates for tests. I only give extensions in extreme circumstances and will not give them on the day of the exam. If the exam is missed for a valid reason (i.e. documented illness), then you will write it as soon as you return to school. Missing the test without a valid reason (no phone call into the office) will result in not being able to write the test (ie: you will get zero). It is up to you to ensure that your parent or guardian phones the school if you are sick.
Late Assignments: Assignments that are to be handed in for marks should be in on the date and time that they are due. Since I write the due dates on the board you should always know when things are due. If you are absent (excused only) on the date that it is due, the assignment is to be handed in the day you get back.
Cheating and Plagiarism: Cheating and plagiarism are serious matters and will be dealt with as such. If you are caught copying/cheating off of another student or plagiarizing from another source, the mark for the assignment/lab/test will be a zero. It is also a serious matter to allow someone to cheat off of you. If you knowingly lend your material to someone and that person copies your work, you will be dealt with in the same manner.
In-progess: Students receive an "I" when they are failing or are in serious danger of failing the course. An "I" may also be given if a student has a number of assignmenst not handed in. I need to be able to see what you can do before I can evaluate how you are doing. At the end of the course (after the final exam), any remaining "I's" will be changed to "F" and you must repeat the course before going on.
Attendance: Everyone is expected to attend on a regular basis. Missing a number of classes increases your chance of failure a great deal. If you miss, you must find out what you have missed from another student and try to catch up on your own. If you are still having trouble with missed work after you have worked on it on your own, come see me. It is expected that you make sure that there is a phone call into the office. If I feel that your attendance is becoming a problem, I will contact home. This attendance policy applies to ALL classes.
Lates: You are expected to come to class on time every day. If lates are becoming excessive, I will contact home and then refer the matter to administration if need be.
Materials: You must bring the following items to class EVERY DAY: workbook, sufficient paper, pens AND pencils, an eraser, and a scientific calculator. I will give advanced warning if you need anything else on a particular day. If you need to borrow from another student ask for it nicely (say please and thank you) and discretely, take good care of it, and return it when you are done. Due to the loss of many calculators, I will not lend you mine. You MUST buy your own calculator as soon as the course begins.
Work Habits: You are expected to be on task for the entire class. If I am teaching, you should be listening actively or copying down notes. Remember if you chose not to write the notes, I will not repeat them. If I have given you an assignment, you should be actively working on it. I will not help you get caught up on work you have missed because you were not on task.
Electronic Devices: It is not acceptable to have cell phones going off during class time nor is it appropriate to be texting during class. Students are expected to leave these devices in their lockers or bag. If your device becomes a distraction in class, I will confiscate it until the end of class (and yes, I can do that). Further violations will be dealt with by administration.
Attitude: Sexist, racist, or homophobic language and behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstance. I do not accept swearing, put-downs, horse-play and other such behaviour.
